Special
Projects ++
In 2006
Indian Ocean Adventures (IOA) and
the M/V Mahtab joined forces with Reef Check
and the Earthwatch Institute to conduct coral reef surveys
on the northern Andaman Sea coast of Thailand.
IOA allowed Reef Check and Earthwatch to
charter the boat at a much reduced cost in order to assist
with this important conservation project. Coral reefs in this
area were heavily impacted by the tsunami of December, 2004
and
IOA hopes to assist scientists in assessing
and conserving reefs and other marine habitats in the area.
Our team visited island reefs including the Koh Surin National
Parks and Richeulue Rock. Check out some of the pics.
IOA
hopes to collaborate on similar projects throughout its range,
hopefully having a positive effect on the natural and cultural
resources of Thailand, Burma, the Andaman Islands and Sumatra.
Stay tuned for future “Special Projects” when
we invite you to join scientific/conservation expeditions
as an “
eco-volunteer” (of course we’re
always looking for waves and fun along the way).
Potential conservation volunteer expeditions coming up include:
Reef Check trips to Andaman Islands India- Spring 2008
Reef Check trips to Simeulue Island, Sumatra- Summer 2007
